You deserve a guide that helps you feel stronger, connected, and more alive.

  • You may feel trapped, stuck, paralyzed by indecision. You want to change your life but don’t know where or how to begin. You feel like a stranger in your own body, and it’s not getting better.

  • You need a body practice that is both methodical and responsive to your needs–whether you are injured, fatigued, restless, or feeling fine–and not, a mechanized, cookie-cutter routine from a commercially driven establishment.

  • You crave a solution that goes beyond physical empowerment. You want  robust digestion, improved circulation, hormonal balancing, and a calm nervous system, and a path that takes you to your authentic self.

  • You need a physical practice that will clear your mind without exhaustion. You crave mental space for wisdom and creativity to flow through you.

Your yearning for inner peace and vitality is within reach, and we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

Alcove Yoga: Yoga with Personalization and Expertise

A Toolkit For Transformation

When you feel stuck in your life, change feels necessary but impossible. At Alcove Yoga, we know how to help you clear your mind and focus on the body so that you get out of mental loops replay in your head.

A Gradual Approach To Self-Mastery

If you’ve been ignoring signs of fatigue, boredom, and restlessness just to keep yourself going, eventually, you”ll lose touch with your inner wisdom. We’re not going to distract you with fancy lights and music. We offer a step by step approach that really works.

Adaptability

Yoga practice has to be adaptable to your changing conditions. We know how to adapt asanas for your needs (stiffness, weakness, menstruation, backache) so that you can keep your practice going.

Instructions That Make Sense

The more you understand the actions of an asana and the responses in your body, the more powerful your practice will be. Here, we don’t just tell you what to do–we explain how and why. No more blind “follower the leader” for you!

A Yoga That Grows With You

For healthy beginners under 40, the practice is faster paced, more athletic. For  beginners over 40, poses are held longer to develop bone strength and endurance. Props are made available for assistance with balance or tightness. Once you are a seasoned practitioner, there are no limits.

At Alcove Yoga, we don’t just guide you towards better health; we empower you to transform your life, establishing body and mind habits that bring vitality and peace. Let’s embark on this transformative journey together.

Welcome!

At Alcove Yoga, we understand that life’s pains create strong desire for freedom. We know that the burdens you carry can make you an intense practitioner.  If you’ve tried other kinds of yoga and felt “meh“, you may be one of those people who needs intense physical and mental practice to get unstuck in life.

Our founder, Pauline Schloesser, discovered the transformative power of Iyengar yoga during her own journey of healing and self-discovery. Through decades of dedicated practice and teaching, she has honed an approach which addresses physical and emotional challenges through asana practice. Pauline is the only Level 3 Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher in Houston.

How it works

Step 1: Call to Action (Need to fill this in)

Step 2: After a couple weeks of practice, you’ll notice that yourre more aware of your posture. Feelings of increased strength, relaxation, and connectedness to your body are common. You’ll get a clear head and experience more restful sleep.

Step 3: After a year of practice, you’re starting to understand that yoga has to be a part of your life. You’re not just stronger and more flexible; you’re experiencing better sleep, digestion, and with regular practice, and you’re more aware of what’s going on physically and mentally when you’re not practicing. You’ve learned tools to ward off back pain, keep shoulders, knees, and hip joints healthy. You’ve learned how to nourish yoruself when feeling depressed and quieten yourself when feeling anxious. You’re already more in touch with yourself than you were and your quest for spiritual contentment will begin in earnest.

Alcove is the best yoga in Houston -- and I've been to a LOT of studios in this town. Pauline has a knowledge of anatomy and alignment that translates into a class experience that leaves me feeling as if I've had a massage. It's not a "flow" class and you won't be listening to groovy tunes or sweating up a storm. Instead, you'll focus on precise, intentional movement with breath, expertly led and cued. I've built strength and flexibility...and healed many of the injuries I sustained doing yoga elsewhere. If it's your first experience with Iyengar Yoga, it may take a little while to adjust to it. But if you stick with the program and follow Pauline's cues, you'll be surprised at how good you can feel.

I really enjoy and am very grateful to have joined Pauline's Men's essentials class. It's my first time trying an Iyengar practice and I was quite apprehensive in the beginning. Pauline made me feel at ease with her warm welcome and her inspired teaching style. Her sequencing of poses is very deliberate and I personally feel enriched at the end of every class. The studio is cozy and impeccably clean.

I cannot more highly recommend Pauline's Iyengar classes at Alcove Yoga. Since beginning classes in 2019, I have noticed marked improvements in many areas -- more strength and flexibility, higher confidence, and decreased anxiety. No matter your experience level, you will receive detailed instruction on improving your poses, strength, and flexibility in class. I particularly love Women's Essentials, which focuses on core tone/strength and pelvic health and Iyengar Ignite, which is a great introductory series that will take you from beginner to inversions over the course of 8 weeks.

Alcove Yoga provides yoga instruction with a personal touch - whether it's online or in person. The cozy and fully equipped studio allows for just the right class size. Live streaming online classes offer the same expertise and attention to detail as the in person classes. Any current practitioner or curious newcomer would benefit from Pauline's deep understanding of the human body and the Iyengar Yoga tradition. I've been practicing various yoga styles for almost 20 years. I experienced improvements in my strength, endurance, and posture after attending just a few classes. I highly recommend this yoga studio.

Alcove Yoga is such a unique yoga experience in the best way possible. The instructors give you individual attention and modifications. They take the time to learn and understand each student’s body and needs. That’s what sets AY apart from any other studio. When I go to class I know that I will get exactly what my body needs. I have scoliosis which used to cause chronic back pain, but with the help of Pauline and the other instructors my pain is gone! I can’t brag on this place enough.

I've been practicing Iyengar yoga off and on now since the mid '80s... it is quite honestly my favorite style of yoga because I feel it has the most integrity. Pauline built this beautiful studio as an extension to her home during last year's remodeling... and it is yoga heaven! To top it off... Pauline is an excellent teacher and is constantly deepening her practice and knowledge base by attending Iyengar workshops... making the 20+ mile drive well worth it when time allows. If you want to know what "attention to detail" really means... start a regular practice at this studio!
