Yoga Studies and Teacher Education
December 2026 – May 2027
Yoga Studies and Teacher Education is a six-month, in-person program at Alcove Yoga, meeting one weekend per month from December 2026 through May 2027.
As the only currently advertised Iyengar Yoga teacher education program in the Houston area, this course offers a unique opportunity for serious practitioners to deepen their study of yoga in a focused and committed community.
The program is intended for students who already have an established practice of Iyengar Yoga. Participants are welcome from Alcove Yoga and other Iyengar Yoga communities.
Who Is This Program For?
- Dedicated students and practitioners who wish to deepen their understanding and experience of āsana, prāṇāyāma, yoga philosophy, and mantra for their own development.
- Aspiring and certified Iyengar Yoga teachers who wish to develop their knowledge and teaching skills, including preparation for Level 1 and Level 2 Iyengar Yoga assessments.
- Established students who want to support the development of certified Iyengar Yoga teachers in the Houston area.
All will study together, bringing their experience, curiosity, and commitment to a shared exploration of Iyengar Yoga.
Although this is not a certification program, it helps aspiring teachers prepare for Level 1 assessment and supports certified teachers working toward Level 2.
Program Components
Each weekend will include a combination of study, practice, and experiential learning:
- Āsana class
- Prāṇāyāma class
- Śāstra (study of traditional yoga texts)
- Chanting and mantra practice
- Sequence-building exercises
- Learning manual adjustments through partner work
- Peer teaching, with participants who do not aspire to teach taking part as students
- One shared group meal on Saturday evening or Sunday afternoon after class
Commitment to Practice and Study
Participants are expected to attend all six monthly weekends, maintain a regular personal practice, and attend weekly Iyengar Yoga classes.
Weekly classes are an essential complement to the weekend studies and are not included in the program tuition.
The program is offered exclusively in person, allowing students to learn directly from the teacher and one another through shared practice, discussion, observation, and hands-on learning.
Some reading and writing assignments will be given, particularly for aspiring teachers.

Not at this time. Our priority is to bring together a group of students who can commit to the full six-month program. Continuity of participation is important for building a cohesive community of study and supporting the development of each participant.
We are establishing a scholarship fund to help students for whom the cost of the program would otherwise be an obstacle to participation. We welcome contributions to this fund, including from those who are unable to participate in the program themselves.
We understand that occasional absences may be unavoidable. However, tuition covers enrollment in the full six-month program, and we are unable to offer discounts for missed classes.
No. The program provides an opportunity for sustained study and development. For those pursuing teacher certification, it offers preparation relevant to Level 1 assessment and, for certified teachers, further development toward Level 2 assessment.

Support the Scholarship Fund
We believe that financial circumstances should not prevent committed students from pursuing a deeper study of Iyengar Yoga.
We are building a scholarship fund to help make this opportunity accessible to students who need financial assistance. Contributions of any amount are welcome and will help support participation in the program.
