Level 1: For those new to Iyengar Yoga in Houston. Here the basic alignment of joints is taught. Standing postures are emphasized, though some seated and gentle back bending postures are introduced as well. Even if you have previous yoga experience, if you’re new to the Iyengar method, start here.
Level 2: For experienced beginners and intermediate students. After you know the basic standing asanas and understand the alignment of major joints, it’s time to start learning and practicing inversions, like Salamba Sarvangasana (shoulderstand) and Sirsasana (headstand). Here we also learn more complex postures and those that require more hamstring flexibility, such as Parivrtta Trikonasana upper body strength Adho Mukha Vrksasana (full arm balance) and backbending, like and Urdhva Dhanurasana.
Level 3: For solid intermediate students. In Level 3 it is assumed that you have familiarity with basic alignment in all categories of postures. Houston yoga students must be able to come up into Urdhva Dhanurasana, Sirsasana, Salamba Sarvangasana, and Adho Mukha Vrksasana (full arm balance), or practice the substitution that is appropriate for specific conditions. Permission from instructor is required.
Women’s Yoga Class: A class for women only, followed by vegetarian dinner. This class starts with 75 minutes of asana (postures) and pranayama (regulation of breath) and is followed by a dinner right in the studio. The asana class offers the opportunity to practice Iyengar Yoga in a fully equipped studio. Pregnant women are welcome. Relieve stress, remove backache, and reduce swelling and other uncomfortable symptoms of pregnancy. Pranayama (breath control exercises) also help to prepare mentally for labor and delivery. The “dinner circle” following class offers healthful replenishment and a rare opportunity to meet and get to know other women in Houston. Many women have made lasting friendships here that have extended into stroller circles and moms’ groups.
